March 15, 2024

Statement by Mr. SUZUKI Shunichi, Minister of Finance, Japan

Dr. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has been recommended by European countries for the next Managing Director of the IMF. Dr. Georgieva also expressed her interest to serve for the second term.

Dr. Georgieva, as the incumbent Managing Director of the IMF since 2019, has demonstrated strong leadership and implementation skills in addressing global macroeconomic challenges, including by playing the prominent role in delivering timely support to member countries severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as energy and food crisis resulting from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. She also realized quota increases under the 16th General Review of Quotas and is strongly committed to its timely implementation.

The IMF should continue to effectively help its members cope with ongoing multiple challenges. The continuous strong leadership of Dr. Georgieva, who has proven to be highly qualified as the Managing Director of the IMF, will be instrumental to ensure the stability of the international monetary system and to achieve sustainable global economic growth. Japan therefore supports her second term as the Managing Director and will remain in close cooperation with the IMF.
