Resumption of the Dissemination of Data Regarding the Sub-components of "Business" and "Personal" Under "Travel" in Balance of Payments Statistics

The Ministry of Finance (MOF) and the Bank of Japan (BOJ) have resumed the dissemination of "Travel" sub-components, namely, "Business" and "Personal", in balance of payments statistics. Monthly data from July 2001 to December 2003 were released today on BOJ's Web site (http://www.boj.or.jp/en/type/stat/dlong/bop/bop/index.htm) and will be included in BOJ's Balance of Payments Monthly No.451, which will be published in May.

Thereafter, monthly data for each quarter will be put on BOJ's Web site when revised balance of payments statistics are released, i.e., January, April, July and October and also included in BOJ's Balance of Payments Monthly in the month following release on BOJ's Web site.

The dissemination of the "Business" and "Personal" sub-components of "Travel" ceased from monthly data for July 2001 because the requirement for Japanese citizens to fill in embarkation cards, previously a principal data source, was abolished. Since these data are standard balance of payments components in IMF's Balance of Payments Manual, 5th edition, the current global standard for balance of payments statistics, it is considered important to compile and disseminate such data in order to enhance the quality of Japan's balance of payments. MOF and BOJ thus decided to resume dissemination of the data, compiled by reviewing estimation methods based on new data sources.
