Japan-Korea Finance Deputies’ Meeting, June 1-2, 2023


  1. Mr. KANDA Masato, Japan’s Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs (VM KANDA) and Mr. KIM Seong-Wook, Korea’s Deputy Minister for International Affairs of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (DM KIM), convened a Deputies’ meeting at the Seoul Government Complex on June 1-2, 2023. This follows the agreement between Mr. SUZUKI Shunichi, Japan’s Minister of Finance and Mr. CHOO Kyungho, Korea’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance on May 2, 2023 to resume the Annual Japan-Korea Finance Ministerial Dialogue.

  2. During the meeting, VM KANDA and DM KIM discussed the preparation of the 8th Ministerial Dialogue, in light of the substantial enhancement of cooperation between the two governments.

  3. VM KANDA and DM KIM broadly agreed on the possible details of the 8th Dialogue as follows:
    • Date: June 29, 2023 (tentative and subject to the availability of the Ministers)
    • Place: Tokyo
    • Possible agenda:
      • Global and regional economy
      • Cooperation in G20 and follow-up of G7’s dialogue with partner countries
      • Cooperation in third countries, including through infrastructure investment
      • Bilateral and regional financial cooperation
      • Other possible bilateral cooperation such as taxes and customs

  4. VM KANDA and DM KIM will continue working closely for the success of the 8th Dialogue. They expected that the Annual Japan-Korea Finance Ministerial Dialogue will contribute to the “shuttle diplomacy” between two countries.
