Designs of The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games Commemorative Coin Program (The Handover from the Rio 2016 to the Tokyo 2020)
The Ministry of Finance, after considering coins commemorating the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in 2020, has made the decision to release the following information on commemorative coins with a face value of 1,000 yen featuring the theme of the handover of host city from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo.
These commemorative coins features color printing on both faces-making it the first of its type for Japan.
- (Note 1) Since these commemorative coins using a precious metal as its base material have been crafted with special technologies, the cost required to manufacture the coins exceeds their face value, which make it premium-grade commemorative coin.
- (Note 2) On the design details, please see References 1 and 2.
- (Note 3) These commemorative coins will not be exchanged at financial institutions, and will only be available through mail-order the Japan Mint. The sales information, including ordering procedures and period of availability, etc., will be later released by the Japan Mint.
