Counterfeit 10,000 Yen Silver Coins Discovered

The Ministry of Finance has received a report from Japan Mint with regard to the results of its examination of 10,000 yen silver coins (the 60th Year of the Emperor on the Throne 10,000 yen Silver Coin) that are suspected to be counterfeit coins.
If you find any suspicious coins that have the features described below, please report to your local police or the Bank of Japan immediately.
The Ministry of Finance has also notified financial institutions of the features of these counterfeit coins to call for their attention.
〇Features of the counterfeit 10,000 yen silver coins(397kb,PDF)PDF(PDF:808KB)
・Year of issue: 1986
・Material: Pure silver
・Weight: Almost the same as the genuine coin
・Diameter: Slightly larger than the genuine coin
・Color: Silver
・Design: The lines of the characters in general are thick and have rounded ends. The design is partly different from
        that of the genuine coin.
・Surface: The mirror plane is glossy and the decorative parts are whitish.
・Ridges on the edge: The ridges are clear and sharp, and fewer than on the genuine coin.
・Pearl-like dots: Each dot is larger and whiter in general and the intervals are smaller than on the genuine coin.

・Hem width: Larger than on the genuine coin.

The coins that have been judged by Japan Mint to be counterfeit coins are the same type as those  regarding which the Ministry of Finance called for attention in its announcement dated December 3, 2013.

Since May 2016, 10,000 yen silver coins suspected as being counterfeit have been discovered at financial institutions in Japan. Some of these coins have been examined by Japan Mint and judged to be counterfeit.
