Designs of The Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 Commemorative Coin Program (Second Issue)

The Ministry of Finance has decided to issue 37 types of coins commemorating the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 in four series before the opening of the Tokyo 2020 Games. For the second issue, ten types of designs were decided as follows for four types of 1,000-yen premium-grade silver coin, and six types of 100-yen clad coin. They will be issued as outlined in the Attachment(PDF:69KB).

 (Note 1) The diameters are 40 mm for the 1,000-yen silver coins, and 22.6 mm for the 100-yen clad coins.

 (Note 2) Clad coins refer to the coins with a metal layer sandwiched by the different types of metal plates by using the clad technology.

○The 1,000-yen silver coins will not be exchanged at financial institutions, and will only be available through mail-order to the Japan Mint.

○Applications to purchase the 1,000-yen silver coin are accepted by the Japan Mint for around three weeks from Thursday, January 31, 2019.The sales information, including ordering procedures, will be announced on the website of the Japan Mint(https://www.mint.go.jp/)after 5:00 pm on Wednesday January 30, 2019.

○Contact for inquiries on application procedures (available from 5:00 pm on Wednesday, January 30, 2019): Japan Mint Hello Dial system (050-5548-8686; available from 8:00 to 21:00, every day of the year)

○The 100-yen clad coins are circulated by being exchanged at their face value over the counter at financial institutions. The exchange guidelines will be announced around June 2019 by the Ministry of Finance.
