Statement by Mr. Taro ASO, Minister of Finance, Japan
On August 23, the World Bank launched the Presidential selection process, and the current President, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, expressed his intention to seek a second term.
Since he took office as President, Dr. Kim set twin goals of ending extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity, and addressed a range of development challenges with excellent leadership. I highly appreciate his achievements.
Under Dr. Kim’s leadership, Japan and the World Bank have worked closely together to cope with various issues such as global health, refugee crisis and quality infrastructure investment.
Based on these considerations, Japan supports a second term for Dr. Kim. Japan will continue to cooperate with the World Bank led by Dr. Kim, and contribute to supporting developing countries.
