Press Statement on the Presidential Election of the Inter-American Development Bank

   As the next President of the IDB, Japan supports Mr. Mauricio Claver-Carone, Deputy Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the National Security Council, who has been nominated by the United States. Japan appreciates Mr. Claver-Carone as a highly qualified candidate, with considerations on a merit-basis.

   Now is the crucial moment for the IDB to respond to the crisis pertaining to COVID-19 pandemic. As the absence of leadership should be avoided, Japan supports for the IDB’s presidential election to be held on 12-13 September as planned.

   Japan is willing to continue to cooperate with the IDB and contribute to assisting developments in the LAC region.
