Statement by Mr. ASO Taro, Minister of Finance, Japan

Dr. Kristalina Georgieva, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the World Bank, has been nominated as the candidate for the next Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Dr. Georgieva has played key roles in addressing global policy agenda in the World Bank Group. Her long, extensive and distinguished career also includes the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management.

Most recently, as the CEO of the World Bank, she has demonstrated strong leadership in coordinating the capital increase agreement of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) last year, through intensive dialogues with numerous stakeholders. The agreement that she successfully coordinated will help the IBRD better utilize its scarce resource by enhancing support for low income countries, while adopting selective engagement with countries above the graduation threshold.

Her track record of strong leadership and coordination in addressing and resolving global macroeconomic challenges, as stated above, has shown that she is capable of managing important international organizations. I am fully confident that Dr. Georgieva is highly qualified for the next Managing Director of the IMF.

Japan therefore supports her selection. We are willing to continue our close cooperation with the IMF under her leadership to ensure stability of international monetary system and to address global policy risks and challenges.
