JOINT STATEMENT BY THE FINANCE MINISTERS
OF THAILAND AND JAPAN

  1. Today, Mr.Tarrin Nimmanahaeminda, Finance Minister of Thailand,who is visiting Japan for talks on 'New Miyazawa Initiative', met with Mr. Kiichi Miyazawa, Finance Minister of Japan. The two Ministers discussed the recent developments in Asian economies, particularly those in Thailand and recognized some improvements in the financial markets of the region.

  2. Minister Tarrin welcomed the New Initiative recently announced by Minister Miyazawa and reiterated its importance in helping overcome economic crisis in this region. As such, he requested financial support from Japan under this initiative to help Thailand further stimulate its economy and effectively deal with its current economic difficulties.

  3. Minister Miyazawa noted some recent progress made in Thailand in implementing measures for economic recovery and necessary economic reforms and expressed his firm commitment to renew its support to Thailand. In this regard, he expressed his intention to send a mission to Thailand in early November to discuss and identify the needs of Thailand and, then, to coordinate schemes under the New Initiative to satisfy them in an expeditious way.
