THE INTRODUCTION OF NEW
SERIES BANK OF JAPAN NOTES
The new series of the 10,000
yen, 5,000 yen, and 1,000 yen Bank of Japan notes as stated below will be
issued in order to improve their security against counterfeiting.

Security Features
In addition to watermark, intaglio printing, and microprinting,
etc., that are used in the current notes, the security features of
new notes will include pearl (iridescent) ink and latent image
(combination of line art works and watermark) adopted in the 2,000
yen note. Other latest security features shall be introduced,
including hologram and watermark-bar-pattern.

Tactile Marks
The new notes will include the tactile mark similar to that
adopted in the 2,000 yen note. The designs of the tactile mark
will be decided after further consideration.

The new series of Bank of Japan notes
will be put into circulation in the first half of fiscal year
2004.
