Statement by Mr. Taro Aso, Minister of Finance, Japan

The Asian Development Bank announced today that Mr. Takehiko Nakao, the incumbent President of the Bank, is unanimously re-elected as a result of voting by member countries. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to member countries for their support for Mr. Nakao.

During his presidency since April 2013, Mr. Nakao has demonstrated his superb leadership in undertaking various reforms of the Bank, including boosting the Bank’s lending capacity through the combination of lending operations of the Asian Development Fund (ADF) with the Ordinary Capital Resources (OCR) and strengthening of its climate financing. I understand that his re-election is the reflection of these brilliant achievements. .

The Bank, marking the 50th anniversary in 2016, is expected to steadily fulfill its mission in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I strongly hope that the Bank, under Mr. Nakao’s leadership, further contribute to enhancing sustainable growth and poverty reduction in the Asia-Pacific region.
