Signing of Memorandum of Cooperation on Container Security with Canada

The Ministry of Finance and the Canada Border Services Agency signed a Memorandum on the Cooperation on Container Security (commonly referred to as the Container Security Initiative, or CSI) on Thursday, June 5, in Ottawa to implement a partnership program aimed at identifying high-risk containers bound for each country at an earlier stage of trade before exportation.

Implementing CSI with Canada, in addition to the already operational CSI cooperation with the U.S., will lead to furthering the security and facilitation of maritime cargo shipments between Japan and North America.

<Outline of the Memorandum>

The Customs and Tariff Bureau of the Ministry of Finance of Japan and the Canada Border Services Agency intend to implement the Cooperation on Container Security based on the following principles.
